More and more unions, community & political organisations and individuals are taking a stand against AUKUS and the drive to war. On this page we’ll list the ones we know about. We hope you’ll take inspiration from this list, and find an example you can use to get support from own group—be sure to let us know.
- ACTU President Michele O’Neil stated at the National Press Club on 28 March 2023 (around 51:20 in video):
The ACTU has a longstanding policy opposition to nuclear power, nuclear waste and proliferation. And we also have a longstanding policy position that supports a nuclear-free defence policy. These are not positions that have been developed in the last weeks or months. They’re decades-long, and our position hasn’t changed. - Sydney Anti-AUKUS Coalition have collected several union statements.
- Merri-bek Council in Naarm/Melbourne passed an anti-nuclear motion on 12 April 2023, which includes opposition to nuclear submarines.
- The Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN) lists many statements of support on this Campaign announcements and information page.
Resolution passed unanimously at the Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union (CFMMEU) National Conference December 2022:
CFMMEU National Conference is opposed to the ongoing and reckless AUKUS military alliance to develop nuclear submarine capability.
The secretive plan could cost as much as $170 billion and continues to escalate conflict with China and throughout our region.
This money should be spent on health care, education, social housing, natural disaster response and development of publicly owned renewable energy capacity.
We support workers across the world opposing war and excessive military spending and pledge ongoing opposition to further expansion of the nuclear industry.
